Self-Defence against attack from front

1. Defense against front shirt grab

Anybody that grabs you is a threat and the only way to get rid of the hand is to forget about the hand and start hitting. The quicker you hit the better your chances of seperating from your attacker becomes.

Below is a video which helps you how to defend yourself against front shirt grab. The most important part of demonstration in this video is from 0:27 - 0:45 minutes. And from 0:52 onwards the instructor teaches you step by step how to defend yourself against a shirt grab from the front.

2. Defend against Front Bear Hug

There are a few steps you always want to do to defend yourself from front bear hug:

  1. Since a Bear hug is a close range attack with limited space, the first thing you want to do is create some space. We typically accomplish this with a strike to the groin either with the backs of our hands or with repetitive grabbing and clawing at the groin. The violent torquing motion should suffice to create space. If one shot didn't do it, hit again!
  2. As you strike to create space you want to establish your base to get balanced. To do this you step back with one leg into essentially a fighting stance. Preferably with your dominant leg, but it is really irrelevant which leg steps back.
  3. After you strike and base, you want to keep the space you just worked to create. Do this by keeping your hands at their hips and locking out your elbows.
  4. By holding their hips or getting your underhooks you are also creating handles by which you will use to deliver knee strikes with the leg you stepped back with. How many? As many as it takes to break the grip at which point you can transition to a clinch and/or other strikes and ultimately escape!

Watch the video below to understand visually how to defend yourself against front bear hug.

TIP: Always remember, as with any technique, your response to the attack should be immediate, fast, and violent. You must utilize violence of action to free the grab.

3. Defend against a Front Choke

Watch the video below to learn the steps to defend yourself against front choke.

Let's do a quick recap and see what lessons we can takeaway from them:

  1. First and foremost is to address the immediate threat (hands around your throat)
  2. Plucking: Hands like hooks, don't grab wrists, rather hook wrists from inside
  3. Use the large muscles of your back and shoulders vs their finger, wrist and arm muscles
  4. Simultaneous pluck and groin kick/knee strike (depending on distance)
  5. Land Forward, the video above shows to take a step back, and we want to land forward in order to close the gap for a clinch and/or follow-up strikes which is also demonstrated in the video.
  6. The key to this technique is it's explosiveness, this is the key to most Krav Maga techniques, when its time to go off, you go off like a bomb with unrelenting speed, aggression, and violence until you are safe and the threat has been neutralized.
